Marked Tree tames Cougars in district semi-finals

Marked Tree used a stingy defense to help them down Rector 54-38 this past Thursday in the 2A-3 district tournament being held in Monette.

Rector opened the game with a three-pointer for an early 3-0 lead only to see Marked Tree reel off the next nine points to go up 9-3. Jay Perry scored Marked Tree's first point hitting one of two free throws. Lexi Perry scored inside, Jay Perry scored on back to back lay ups and Dez Reel grabbed a rebound off her own miss and laid it back in for Marked Tree. Rector scored inside to make it 9-5. Jay Perry hit two free throws and the Lady Cougars got a three-pointer to fall to make it 11-8 Marked Tree with 2:36 left. Kambria Marshall hit a jumper for the Lady Indians and Jay Perry scored off an offensive rebound to make it 15-8 at the end of the first quarter.

Marked Tree's defense was especially tough in the second quarter only allowing Rector to score five points. The Lady Indians opened the quarter with an 8-0 run to make it 23-8. Lexi Perry opened the scoring with a jumper, Jay Perry hit two free throws and then got a steal and lay up and Marshall netted a jumper to finish the run. The Lady Cougars got a jumper to fall before Lexi Perry hit one of two free shots and Jay Perry scored back to back buckets to make it 28-10 Marked Tree with 3:09 left. Lexi Perry hit two free throws between a Rector basket and free throw to make it 30-13. Reel got one of two free throws to fall and then scored a lay up with one second left to make 33-13 Lady Indians at halftime.

Rector opened the third quarter with a basket before Marked Tree got back to back scores from Reel and Lexi Perry to make it 37-15 Lady Indians. Reel got a jumper to fall and Marshall scored inside for Marked Tree to make it 41-20 Lady Indians with 2:24 left to play. The Lady Cougars scored the next five before Jay Perry glided in for a Lady Indian lay up making it 43-25 Marked Tree. A Rector score and a free throw from Reel made it 44-27 Marked Tree after three quarters.

The teams traded scores the first three minutes of the fourth quarter with Jay Perry hitting four free throws for Marked Tree to make the score 48-32. Rector got a basket to make ti 48-34 only to see Marked Tree reel off the next points to make it 54-34 with 4:05 left in the game. Lexi Perry scored back to back baskets and Jay Perry hit two free throws for Marked Tree. Rector scored the last two baskets of the game to make the final 54-38.

"I was very pleased with our performance tonight. I thought we played well and hard, the girls were wore out after the game," Marked Tree head coach Derik Drewett said after the game. "Jay Perry did more than she should have tonight as we panicked elsewhere. Reel came through with a good night for us," Drewett added.

Jay Perry led the Lady Indians with 25 points on the night. Lexi Perry scored 13 points and Reel added 10 points.
