Lady Indians advance at regional with victory over Walnut Ridge
Jay and Lexi Perry both had big nights for Marked Tree as the Lady Indians posted a 62-45 win over Walnut Ridge to advance to the 2A North Regional semi-finals this past Thursday in Pangburn.
The Lady Bobcats opened the contest with back to back scores to go up 4-0 early in the first quarter. The Lady Indians came back and scored the next six points. Jay Perry hit two free throws, Lexi Perry scored inside and Jay Perry had a steal and lay up to make it 6-4 Marked Tree. Walnut Ridge again scored back to back buckets to make it 8-6. Lexi Perry tied it with a basket before the Lady Bobcats went up 10-8 with a basket inside. Lexi Perry hit two free throws and Jay Perry scored inside to make it 12-10 Lady Indians before Walnut Ride got a score to tie it a 12. Lexi Perry scored inside with 14 seconds left to give Marked Tree a 14-12 lead after one.
The teams continued to trade leads for much of the second quarter. Lexi Perry scored inside to make it 16-13 Marked Tree only to see Walnut Ridge can a three-pointer to tie the game at 16-16. The Perry duo scored back to back buckets only to see Walnut Ridge score back to back buckets to keep it tied at 20. Jay Perry scored on a lay up, the Lady Bobcats got a basket and Jay Perry scored another lay up off a steal by Kelsey Pitts to make the score 24-22 Lady Indians. Walnut Ridge tied the game at 24 with 2:31 left before Marked Tree got back to back scores from Lexi Perry to make it 28-24 Marked Tree at halftime.
Walnut Ridge made it 28-26 with a basket early in the third before Marked Tree got back to back scores from Jay Perry and Dez Reel to make it 32-26 Lady Indians with 4:20 left. Lexi Perry got back to back conventional three-point plays to increase Marked Tree's lead to 38-28. Jay Perry got back to back scores after a Lady Bobcat free throw to make it 42-29 Lady Indians. Lexi Perry hit two free throws between two Walnut Ridge baskets to make it 44-33 after three quarters of play.
Reel converted an old-fashioned three-pointer to start the fourth and Jay Perry hit a jumper in the lane to make it 49-33 Marked Tree. Lexi Perry hit a free throw and Tullia Tull scored inside in between Lady Bobcats scores to make the score 52-37. The teams traded points for the remainder of the game. Lexi Perry and Tull each had baskets down low making is 56-41 Lady Indians with 3:59 left in the game. Jay Perry connected on two free throws and Reel made four free throws, the last two setting the final score at 62-45.
"I was proud of the girls today," Marked Tree head coach Derik Drewett said after the game. "We were short handed and played mostly with five. A couple of the girls really stepped up today for us," Drewett added.
Jay Perry led Marked Tree with 22 points while Lexi Perry had 21 points and Tull finished with 10 points.
Marked Tree will play Foreman in the opening round of the Class 2A state playoffs in Hampton on Saturday at 2:00 pm.
