Council appoints new fire chief
After the recent passing of Trumann Fire Chief Ricky Winkles, the Trumann City Council appointed Earnie Link as the new chief for the Fire Department.
Link served as Assistant Fire Chief under Winkles. Walters said he would be under a 6-month probation period, as is the policy for hiring any new department head.
The passing of Winkles came on Tuesday, Jan. 28, when he responded to a fire and suffered a massive heart attack.
After appointing Link, the council heard from David Woods, a life-long Trumann resident and retired officer. Woods approached the council with an initiative to build a memorial park at the Trumann Sports Complex.
"When a brother or sister dies in the line of duty, they should be honored," he said. "The city of Trumann has been hit hard in the last decade."
Woods has started a committee that plans to have fundraisers for an approximately $40,000 monument. The committee also plans to take donations from local business and families. He added that he has already heard a lot of support and residents willing to give significant pledges for the monument.
The monument erected will be for EMS, firemen and policemen who gave the ultimate sacrifice. Woods plans to honor those dating all the way back to the beginning of Trumann being named as a city.
"I want this to be something we can be proud of," he said.
Any community members wanting to get involved, Woods said there is a Facebook group "Trumann AR Fallen Heroes Memorial" for the general public to learn more about the project and idea as it progresses.
The council approved this initiative with no cost to the city.
In other business, the council:
