Tyronza to apply for rural fire grant
The Tyronza City Council Tuesday night approved a resolution authorizing Mayor Marion Bearden to apply for a Rural Fire Protection Grant.
The grant is a $5,000 matching grant for obtaining equipment for the fire department. The plan is to use the funding to purchase eight new fire turnout coats and pants to replace the eight oldest pairs of turnouts. Mayor Bearden said a smaller department may purchase the older turnout coats.
In other business, the council discussed a couple of the police cars. The engine blew out in one of the police department's 2008 Dodge Chargers. The same problem with the same model happened to the Marked Tree and Bay Police Departments. The city is also trying to sell the department's 2002 Crown Victoria. Chief Tony Turner said he had gotten an offer of $1,000 so far. The council suggested putting a "for sale" sign on the car for a couple of weeks to see if it generates interest and a higher offer.
