Lady Wildcats downed in tournament opener
Trumann (6-14) couldn't manage to get that key hit with runners in scoring position as they fell to Highland 6-4 in the opening round of the 4A-3 district softball tournament held in Brookland. Twice the Lady Wildcats left runners on second and third to end innings.
Trumann jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Megan McGowan singled with one out before Hannah Wood walked and Neely Blagg singled to load the bases. Kierra Corter singled to score to McGowan and Wood. Highland scored a run in the bottom of first and added another in the bottom of the second to tie the game at 2-2.
Trumann stole a run in the top of third inning as Taelor Gartman singled with one out, Hannah Wood was hit by a pitch and Blagg reached on an error to load the bases. Gartman stole home on the catcher's throw back to pitcher to make it 3-2 Lady Wildcats. The Lady Rebels responded with three runs in the bottom half of the inning to go up 5-3.
Trumann added a run in the top of fifth with a trickery. Gartman reached on an error to start the inning before going to second on a fielder's choice. Gartman stole third and scored when Jasmine Poole took off running to first after strike two enticing the catcher to throw to first thinking it was a dropped ball on strike three allowing Gartman to score making the score 5-4. Highland added a run in the bottom of the sixth to make it 6-4 Highland.
Trumann got a small rally started with two outs in the top of the seventh. Hannah Wood was hit by a pitch and Blagg singled. With runners on second and third Corter grounded out to end the game and the season for the Lady Wildcats.
McGowan took the loss for the Lady Wildcats pitching all six innings. She gave up six runs on seven hits while walking four and striking out one.
Gartman finished with a hit, two runs scored and three stolen bases, Blagg and Haven Taylor each collected two hits, Corter had a hit and two RBIs, McGowan had a hit and run scored with Wood adding a run scored.
