Train derailment causes detour on Highway 49

Tuesday, June 10, 2014

A train that was derailed during the June 5 storm caused a detour on Highway 49 in Poinsett County, according to Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department (AHTD) officials.

AHTD reported Monday crews were repairing the Union Pacific railway near Weiner at the Poinsett/Craighead county line. Once their work is complete, AHTD will repair Highway 49.

Highway 49 southbound traffic is detoured to Highway 226 Spur to Highway 226 to Cash. Drivers will then travel south on Highway 18 to Uno, then east on Highway 214 back to Highway 49.

Highway 49 northbound traffic is detoured to Highway 14 at Waldenburg. Drivers will then travel to Harrisburg, then take Highway 1 to Jonesboro.

The railroad work and related detour are expected to continue through Friday, June 13th. Afterward, AHTD will evaluate damage to the highway and schedule repair work.

Traffic will be controlled using barrels and warning signs and Railroad Police.

Motorists should exercise caution when approaching and traveling through all highway work zones. Additional travel information can be found at IDriveArkansas.com or ArkansasHighways.com or on Twitter @AHTD.
