Indians run by Piggott

Marked Tree (1-0) used a stable of running backs to chew up yards on the ground as the Indians defeated Piggott 28-16 this past Friday night in Marked Tree.

Piggott got a big kickoff return to start the game and with a penalty added on started their first possession at the Indians 13-yard line. Facing fourth and two at the seven-yard line the Mohawks go for it coming up short giving the ball to the Indians with 10:00 left in the opening quarter. The teams traded possessions the remainder of the quarter with both defenses playing strong as the first quarter ended with the score 0-0.

The Indians force an incomplete pass on the fourth down on the first play of the second quarter to take over possession on their own 31-yard line. Cameron Mitchell took a speed sweep on first play for Marked Tree after the turnover and gallops 69 yards for the touchdown to make it 6-0 Indians with 11:35 left in the second quarter. Josh Simpson adds the point after to make it 7-0. Blake Daniels found an open Octavious Dean with a short pass and Dean sprinted 42 yards for the Marked Tree touchdown with 5:02 left in the half. Simpson was again on the extra point to make it 14-0 Indians. Piggott went to a no huddle offense and pounded the ball with run after run to get inside the Indians 10-yard line with less that a minute left in the half. The Mohawks went for it on fourth and goal where they came up two yards short of a score as Dean made the tackle to prevent the score with 21 seconds left. Marked Tree ran the clock out and took a 14-0 lead into the locker room.

Marked Tree opened the second half with a 90 yard drive ending with a Tevin McGee 14 yard touchdown run with 8:02 left. Simpson adds this third extra point to make it 21-0 Marked Tree. Piggott got on the board with 1:47 left in the third quarter on a touchdown run and with the two-point conversion made the score 21-8 Indians.

Bailey Gilbert capped a 99 yard drive for the Indians scampering the final 40 yards for a touchdown with 1:36 left in the game. Simpson was good on the PAT to make it 28-8 Marked Tree. Piggott added a score and two-point conversion with 15 seconds left to set the final score at 28-16 Marked Tree.

"The good, the bad and the ugly," was Marked Tree head coach Waylon Dunn's first statement about the game. "For the most part we played well, cramps was an issues in the second half. The defense came up big tonight, they played well," Dunn said. "We controlled the line in the second half and that helped," Dunn added.

Mitchell led the Indians in rushing with 147 yards on 12 carries and a touchdown. Gilbert finished with 59 yards and a touchdown, McGee ran for 49 yards and a touchdown with Lott chipping in 34 yards rushing. Daniels completed 4 of 7 passes for 86 yards with one touchdown and one interception.

Marked Tree will host Harrisburg Friday night with kickoff set for 7 p.m.
