Layne strikes out 13 in Yellowjackets' win
Taylor Layne had command of all his pitches as he allowed only one hit and struck out 13 Ridgefield Chrisian School (RCS) batters as the 'Jackets blanked the Warriors 8-0 this past Friday in Bay.
Neither team scored in the first inning as Bay wasted an opportunity leaving runners on second and third. Layne struck out the side in order in the top of the second before hit teammates gave him all the support he'd need in the bottom half. Austin Webb and Dustin Utley both scored after drawing walks to give Bay a 2-0 lead. Jake Crocetto walked and came around to score on an error making it 3-0. Nolan Smith and Nathan Smith walked before Layne was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Jonathan Crain made the Warriors pay with a two-run double to the gap to make the scoring Nolan Smith and pinch runner Quentin Francomano to make the score 5-0 'Jackets. Layne scored on a passed ball to make it 6-0 after two innings of play.
RCS got their only hit in the top of the third with two outs but left the runner stranded as Layne struck out the next batter. Bay couldn't score in the bottom of the third as the scored stayed 6-0 Yellowjackets. Webb singled to start the bottom of the fifth inning for Bay. Webb stole second and third before scoring on a passed ball to make it 7-0 Bay.
Layne retired RCS in order in the top of the sixth before the 'Jackets added their final run in the bottom of the inning. Layne drew a one-out walk and preceded to steal second and third base. Layne scored on a passed ball to make it 8-0 Bay. Layne walked the first batter in the top of the seventh before the runner was forced at second on a fielder's choice. Layne struck out the next two batters to end the game.
Crain led Bay at the plate with a double, two RBIs and a stolen base. Webb had finished with a hit, two runs scored and three stolen bases. Layne scored two runs and stole two bases, Crocetto had a RBI, run scored and a stolen base, Nolan Smith scored a run and stole a base as Utley and Francomano each scored a run.
Layne with all seven innings to gain the win as he allowed no runs on one hit while walking one and striking out 13.
