Late collapse costly for Wildcats
For six innings, Trumann's Kevnote Andrews and Brookland's Mason Tate kept the goose eggs up on the scoreboard. Brookland scored nine runs in the top of the seventh as the Wildcats loaded the bases in their half and left them that way as Brookland posted a 9-0 win this past Tuesday in Trumann.
Brookland threatened to score in the first inning as they loaded the bases but they left the runners there as Andrews' third strikeout of inning left them loaded. Trumann also looked to score in the bottom half as Bradlee McAnally reached on an error before going to third on a base hit by Cain White. Dylan Qualls flied out to right to end the inning with the score 0-0. Brookland got back to back two-out walks in the top of the second only to see Andrews strike out a Bearcat batter to end the inning. Lucas Moye doubled to start the Wildcats' half of the second before advancing to third on a ground out by Cade Gartman. Moye was left on third as Garrett Woods flied out to left to end the inning with the score still 0-0.
The Bearcats again got two runners in scoring position in the top of the third as Andrews struck out a batter to end the third straight at bats for Brookland. Trumann went three up three down as the scored stayed 0-0. Each team went down in order in the fourth and fifth innings as the scored stayed 0-0.
Brookland got a two-out double with the runner advancing to third on an error. The Bearcats tried to squeeze the runner home but Andrews fielded the bunt tossing the ball to Justin Liles who tagged the runner out trying to score. Brookland loaded the bases with two outs but an Andrews' strikeout ended the Bearcat threat as the score stayed 0-0. Connor Haag and Taylor Wilson singled around a pop out by McAnally in the bottom half the sixth for Trumann. White flied out to center before Haag got a late start on a passed ball and was tagged out at the plate to end the inning and keep the score at 0-0.
Brookland started the top of the seventh with an infield single and base on balls to put two runners on base. Another infield singled loaded the bases before a run scored on a Wildcat error to make it 1-0 Bearcats. Back to back single brought in three Brookland base runners to make the score 4-0. The Bearcats added another run on a ground out making it 5-0 before three Trumann errors led to four more Brookland runs to make it 9-0. Moye was hit by a pitch and Liles reached on an error putting two runners on for Trumann with one out in the bottom of the seventh. Woods reached on error as the Wildcats loaded the bases with two outs. Haag's fly ball to center field left the bases loaded and gave Brookland the win.
Andrews took the loss as he pitched six innings while giving up two runs on three hits. He walked eight and struck out nine. Liles pitched the last inning as he gave up seven runs on three hits while walking one, striking out one and hitting one batter.
Haag, Wilson, White and Moye each had a hit for the Wildcats. Haag added a stolen base.
Trumann lost the second game of the doubleheader 12-4 as Wilson took the loss for Trumann. Gartman had three hits, two runs and two stolen bases for the game. Wilson and Qualls each had two hits and a RBI with Wilson adding a stolen base, Haag and Trey Moody each had a hit and run scored, Woods had a hit and RBI and McAnally had a hit.
