Lady Wildcats headed to state tournament

Trumann made a 3-2 lead hold up as Southside Batesville had runners on second and third before Maddi Payne caught a short fly ball to right field giving Trumann the win this past Friday at the 4A-3 East Regional Softball Tournament in Pocahontas. The Lady Wildcats earned a berth in the Class 4A State Softball Tournament to be held in Mena May 13-16.

Trumann got on the board first as Taelor Gartman was hit by a pitch on the first pitch of the game. Payne followed with a single putting two runners on. Gartman stole third after Anna Waleszonia struck out and scored when Hannah Wood lifted a sacrifice fly to center field making it 1-0 Lady 'Cats. Kendall Pruitt popped out to end the the top half of the first. The Lady Southerners tied the game at

1-1 with a run in the bottom of the first inning.

The Lady Wildcats added two more runs in the top of the second to go up 3-1. Hannah Craig doubled to start the inning and was followed by a walk to Neely Blagg. Olivia Greenwell's sacrifice bunt was good moving the runners up a base. Lexi Jackson popped out before Gartman scored Craig and Blagg with a single. Payne reached on an error before Waleszonia popped out to shortstop for out three. Waleszonia set the side down in order in the bottom of the second. Wood singled to lead off the top of the third for Trumann before being left there. Southside loaded the bases with one out but Waleszonia got a strikeout and fly out to end the threat and keep the score 3-1 Trumann.

Each side went three up and three down in the fourth inning as the scored stayed 3-1 Lady 'Cats. Payne and Waleszonia had back to back singles to start the top of the fifth for Trumann. Misty Moye came in to run for Waleszonia and was doubled off as she lost her footing trying to get back to second on a short fly to left field. Pruitt popped out for the third out. The Lady Southerners got runners to second and third with one out before Waleszonia got a pop up for an out and fielded a grounder she threw to first for out three to keep the score 3-1 Trumann. The Lady Wildcats got a two-out single from Greenwell only to leave her stranded in the top of the sixth. Southside added a run to make it 3-2 Trumann headed to the last inning.

Trumann looked to add to their lead in the top of the seventh as Gartman reached on a bunt infield single before moving to second on a sacrifice bunt from Payne. Waleszonia reached on infield single putting runners at the corner. Wood popped out and Pruitt grounded out to leave the runners on base. Southside got runners to second and third with two outs before Waleszonia got the batter to fly out to Payne sending the Lady 'Cats state tournament bound.

Waleszonia got the win for Trumann going all seven innings giving up two runs on six hits. She walked two, struck out four and hit one batter.

Gartman led Trumann at the plate with two hits, a run scored and two RBIs. Payne and Waleszonia each had two hits, Wood had a hit and RBI, Craig and Blagg both had a hit and run scored and Greenwell had a hit.

Trumann lost to Brookland 6-1 in one semi-final contest the following Satruday. Trumann played Heber Springs close in the consolation game falling 7-4 this past Tuesday and will be the fourth seed out of the region.
