Marked Tree Council discussion of Carver Gym continues

Friday, August 14, 2015

The Marked Tree City Council's discussion of the Carver Gym went in circles Monday night since the council did not have prices for renovating the gym compared to building a new one. The council finally voted unanimously to have Mayor Mary Ann Arnold get prices from an engineer on a turn-key job for both a new gym and renovating the current gym, which has been closed since April due to a leaking roof and dangerous conditions. But it took several failed votes to get there.

Discussion on the Carver Gym, which serves the black community in town and was originally part of the George Washington Carver School, began with Mayor Arnold stating the gym was a council issue and only the council would be making decisions on it. She said she had met with the committee she put together during a previous council meeting to discuss the gym, but decisions regarding the gym would only come from the city council.

Mayor Arnold said the main issue Monday night was whether the council wanted to renovate the gym or have a new one built.
