Schools gear up for football season

Thursday, July 14, 2016

As the dead period, no contact between athletes and coaches, came to an end this past Friday, the PCDT

talked with the coaches at Trumann, EPC, Marked Tree and Harrisburg high schools to see what was on their

agendas until school started.

Trumann head coach Scott Waymire said the Wildcats started up July 11 with SST workouts that will run Monday through Thursday with the high school working from 7:30 to 9 each morning followed by the junior high working out

from 9 to 10 each morning with the focus being on weights and conditioning. Waymire also said the team will go to pad camps each Wednesday in Wynne. August 1 the teams will start fall camps, and with the regulations the AAA puts on how many times you can practice, two-a-days are a thing of history.

Brandon Powell takes over the head job at EPC being promoted from junior high coach after Brian Weathers took

a job in administration. Powell said the Warriors will participate in a 7 on 7 league in Wynne every Tuesday

and will look for a couple of pad camps to attend before fall practices start on August 1.

Marked Tree started pre-season workouts on July 11 with the senior high working out at 7:30 and the junior high

working out at 9 according to head coach Cody Wallis. The workouts will feature strength training, agility

drills along with going back over what they had learned in the spring. The Indians will max out at the end of July getting ready to start fall practices on August 1. Wallis also said the senior high team will try to work in a team camp before fall practices start.

First year head coach Charles Benintende said the Hornets started back with their lifting program this past Monday.

Offense and defense will be installed and conditioning will be worked on. Benintende said they will drill on all

phases of the game and work to get their feet, bodies and heads thinking about fundamentals and techniques

needed to be a complete football team. Not sure if any camps are in the works, Benintende said the team will play their annual game at Paragould at the end of August.

All four teams will open the 2016 high school football season on September 2. The Wildcats will travel to Hoxie,

EPC will host Augusta, Marked Tree plays at Clarendon and Harrisburg travels to Cross County.
