Wildcats crush Highland in regular season finale

Trumann (7-3, 5-2 4A-3) jumped on Highland early and never looked back as the Wildcats posted a 48-13 win at Highland. The win gave Trumann the number three spot in the conference as the Wildcats will host Dumas in the first round of the Class 4A state playoffs.

Highland got the ball first and converted a fourth and one during their drive to get the ball in Trumann territory. Jesse Penter and Jay Morgan combined for a big sack on a third down play that forced the Rebels to go for it on fourth down. Highland didn't pick up the first down turning the ball over to the Wildcats with on their own 49-yard line with 9:31 left. Trumann's ground game of Cade Gartman, Koltan Jones and Morgan moved the ball to the Highland five-yard line before Gartman scored the first points of the game on a five yard run with 4:22 left. Will White added the extra-point to make it 7-0 Wildcats. Highland returned the kick-off out to mid-field for their next possession. Gartman got through for a quarterback sack on third down for the Wildcats to make it fourth and long for the Rebels. Highland decided to for the first down only to see White intercept the pass and return it to the Rebels' 42-yard line with 2:23 left. Trumann was driving when the quarter came to an end with the Wildcats up 6-0.

The Wildcats struck quick in the second quarter as Gartman raced 29 yards on the first play to give Trumann a 13-0 lead. White was again good on the extra-point to make it 14-0 Trumann. The Wildcats defense stood strong again as John Dunman got a quarterback sack that forced Highland to punt with the ball going out of bounds at the Trumann 40-yard line with 10:36 left. Trumann struck again quickly at Gartman took the hand-off around the left end and raced 60 yards for the touchdown to make the score 20-0. Whit's extra-point was block leaving the score the same with 10:24 left. Trumann's defense came up big again as Highland coughed the ball up with Jarred Carter falling on the ball at the Wildcats' 47-yard line. Trumann's ground game pounded the ball down to the Highland three-yard line where Jones finished the drive with a three yard run with 5:07 left. The two-point try was no good making the score 26-0 Trumann. Highland got on the board on their next possession as they drove the ball 60 yards and scored on a touchdown pass. The extra-point made the score 26-7 Trumann with 2:39 left. Gartman returned the Highland kick-off out tot he Trumann 37-yard line before a penalty against the Rebels moved the ball to the Highland 48-yard line with 2:30 left. Trumann's ground game went to work again moving the ball to the Highland five-yard line with about a minute left in the half. Garrett Woods found Gartman all alone in the flats for the five yard touchdown pass to make the score 32-7. Gartman added the two-point conversion run making it 34-7 Wildcats with 18 seconds left. Highland had trouble handling Whit's high short kick-off as Terran Blanchard came up with the ball for Truamnn on the Rebels' 38-yard line with 16 seconds left. A pitch to White and throwback to Woods moved the ball to the Highland 24 with eight seconds left before Woods was sacked on the final play coming up with a twisted knee that required help to the locker room. Trumann was up 34-7 at the half.
