Kirby leads Bay to district tournament win

Bailee Kirby scored 19 points to lead Bay to a 25-23 win over Buffalo Island Central (BIC) in the 1A/2A-10 girls' junior high district tournament being played in Marked Tree.

Bay's Olivia Ferguson, the Junior Lady Yellowjackets leading scoring, went down with a knee injury 40 seconds into the game as she went in for a score. BIC got on the board first as Hanah Carle hit two free throws before Destiny Bogard got a steal and lay-up for Bay to make the score 2-2. The Junior Lady Mustangs got a basket from Vicky Esparza before she hit one of two free throws making it 5-2 BIC with 3:55 left. Kirby hit a runner in the lane before hitting one of two free throws to tie the game at 5 as the quarter came to an end.

Kirby hit another runner in the lane to start the second quarter only to see BIC get a three-ball from Laci DeWitt and an inside basket from Emma Graddy to give the Junior Lady Mustangs a 10-7 lead. Kirby hit two free throws for Bay, Graddy hit a jumper for BIC as Kirby hit a jumper for Bay to make the score 12-11 BIC with with just under three minutes left. The Junior Lady Mustangs got one of two free throws from Graddy followed by a jumper from Esparza to make the score 15-11 as Bogard hit one of two free throws for the Junior Lady Yellowjackets to make it 15-12 BIC at the half.
