Late runs costly for Bay at state tournament

Bay (22-6) played toe to toe with top-ranked Woodlawn for five innings in a quarter-final match-up of the Class 1A state baseball tournament this past Saturday in Woodlawn. The Bears scored seven runs in the bottom of the sixth inning on their way to a 7-0 win over the Yellowjackets. The loss ended Bay's season.

Dylan Creech was hit by a pitch leading off for Bay before Nolan Smith moved him to second base with a sacrifice bunt. Taylor Layne grounded out as Caleb Hartgen struck out for out three. Woodlawn went down in order in the bottom of the first. Nathan Higgins struck out leading off the second for the Yellowjackets as Tyler Hartgen struck out too. Quentin Francomano grounded out for the third out. The Bears got a two-out walk before Layne induced a ground ball to end the inning with the game still scoreless.
