Indians down Trumann 73-65 in season opener

Marked Tree led at the end of each quarter as the Class 2A state runner-ups opened their season with a 73-65 win over Trumann this past Tuesday night at Wildcat Gym.

Paul Coleman got Marked Tree on the board first as he hit one of two free throws to make it 1-0 before Trumann got back to back three-pointers from Jacob Ferguson and Ben Turner making it 6-1 Wildcats. Colby Malone scored off the fast break for Marked Tree as Markel Perry converted an old-school three-point play and then followed with a jumper in the lane to make it 8-6 Indians with 3:44 left. Malone hit free throws and followed with a conventional three-point play as Ferguson canned another three-pointer for Trumann making it 13-9 Marked Tree. Jack Brown scored inside for the Indians, Cody Roland got a basket in the paint for Trumann as did Turner to make the score 15-13 Trumann. Turner hit a three-pointer for Trumann, Perry made a jumper in the lane for Marked Tree as AJ Johnson hit two free throws for the Indians to make it 19-16 Marked Tree. MJ Barnes went coast to coast for a Trumann lay-up four seconds left to make the score 19-18 Indians after one.

Roland gave the Wildcats a 21-19 lead with a three-pointer to open the second quarter scoring only to see Malone can a three-pointer for Marked Tree to make it 22-21 Indians. Tray Brown and Malone got easy baskets off the fast break before Alex Moses put back an offensive rebound to make it 26-23 Marked Tree with 4:58 left. Turner scored inside for Trumann, Perry put back in offensive board for the Indians, Turner drilled a three-ball for the Wildcats as Julian Booker netted a three-pointer for Marked Tree to make the score 31-28 Indians. Roland hit one of two free throws for the Wildcats, Perry scored inside for Marked Tree before Roland canned a trey for Trumann to make the score 33-32 Indians. Marked Tree closed out the quarter on a 6-0 run as Booker hit a jumper as Brown made two free throws and followed with a steal and lay-up to make it 39-32 at the half.

Coleman hit one of two free throws for Marked Tree for the first point of the third quarter as Roland canned a three-ball for Trumann to make the score 40-35 Indians. Coleman scored inside for Marked Tree before the Wildcats got back to back baskets from Turner making it 42-39 Indians with 4:33 left to play. Malone hit a baseline jumper for the Indians before hitting one of two free throws to make the score 45-39 Marked Tree. Roland hit another trey for Trumann, Jack Brown hit a three-ball for Marked Tree, Logan Creekmore scored inside for the Wildcats as Malone netted three-ball for the Indians making it 51-44 Marked Tree. Turner got a stick back for Trumann only to see Marked Tree get two free throws from Malone and a three-pointer and fast break lay-up from Tray Brown making the score 58-46 Indians. Ferguson hit two free throws for the Wildcats before Coleman had a stick back basket for the Indians at buzzer giving them a 60-48 lead.

Malone hit two free throws for Marked Tree just over a minute into the fourth quarter as Ferguson hit a three-ball for the Wildcats to make it 62-51 Indians. Coleman scored inside for Marked Tree, Barnes scored inside for the Wildcats, Booker hit one of two free throws for the Indians as Zach Buchanan went coast to coast for a Trumann lay-up to make the score 65-55 Marked Tree with 3:18 left in the game. Jack Brown scored inside for the Indians before Trumann got a jumper in the lane from Turner and a three-pointer from Roland to make it 67-60 Marked Tree. Perry put back an offensive rebound, Booker hit two frees as Tray Brown hit one of two free throws as the Indians pushed their lead to 72-60. Ferguson hit a three-pointer for Trumann, Booker made one of two free throws for Marked Tree as Barnes had a stick back for the Wildcats to set the final score at 73-65 Marked Tree.

Marked Tree's Malone led all scorers with 22 points as Perry and Tray Brown scored 13 and 12 points respectively. Booker finished with nine points, Coleman added eight points, Jack Brown netted seven points as Johnson chipped in two points for the Indians.

The Wildcats had three players in double figures as Turner scored 21 points, Roland added 18 points with Ferguson tossing in 14 points. Barnes added 11 points as Moses, Creekmore and Buchanan each finished with two points for Trumann.
