Lady Indians fall in NEA Invitational opener

After a close first quarter, Marked Tree fell behind by double digits midway through the second quarter and could never recover as Melbourne went on to post a 57-23 win in the opening game of the NEA Invitational Tournament at First National Bank Arena in Jonesboro.

The Lady Bearkatzs jumped out to a 4-0 lead before Brandice Nesby hit one of two free throws for Marked Tree making it 4-1. Melbourne hit a jumper as Jayla Carter scored inside for the Lady Indians and Jayla Carpenter canned a three-pointer for Marked Tree to tie the score at 6. The Lady Bearkatzs scored the next six points to make it 12-6 before Nesby and CJ Barnes scored back to back baskets to make it 12-10 Melbourne at the end of one.

Melbourne opened the second quarter with a 9-0 run to make it 21-10 with 3:56 left. Barnes scored off the fast break for Marked Tree making it 21-12 Lady Bearkatzs only to see Melbourne score the next six points making it 27-12 Melbourne. LaNaysha Moore hit one of to free throws for Marked Tree as the Lady Bearkatzs hit one of two free throws to make the score 28-14 Melbourne at the half.
