Junior Warriors fall in double overtime in district opener

EPC and Cross County needed two overtime quarters to determine a winner this past Monday as the Junior Thunderbirds outscored the Junior Warriors 8-4 in the second overtime to take a 57-53 win in their opening round game of the 1A/2A-10 junior high district tournament in Earle.

Cross County got on the board first with a steal and layup as Preston Rains tied the game at 2 with two free throws with 4:43 left. EPC scored the next seven points as Dalton Herren hit two free throws, Jamario Burrus scored back to back baskets in the paint and Rains hit one of two free throws to make it 9-2 Junior Warriors. The Junior T-birds converted an old-school three-point play with seven seconds left to make the score 9-5 at the end of the first quarter.

Rains' jumper early in the second quarter made it 11-5 EPC as Cross County scored inside making it 11-7. The Junior Warriors got one of two free throws from Josh Gilmore followed by one of two free throws from Burrus before the Junior Thunderbirds hit a three-ball to make it 13-10 EPC with 2:54 left in the first half. Burrus scored inside for the Junior Warriors, Cross County scored back to back baskets as Rains scored inside making it 17-14 Junior Warriors. The Junior T-birds scored a basket with less than a minute left to cut EPC's lead to 17-16 at the half.
