Lady Indians tumble in district opener

Marked Tree had the task of playing Salem, the number one seed from the west, in the opening round of the 2A-2 district tournament this past Monday in Lepanto. The Lady Indians' season came to an end with a 61-32 loss to the Lady Greyhounds.

Salem opened the scoring with a three-pointer before MaKayla Marshall scored inside for Marked Tree to make it 3-2. The Lady Greyhounds reeled off the next 10 points to take a 13-2 lead with 5:10 left. CJ Barnes hit two free throws for the Lady Indians as Taylor McCuiston went coast to coast for a layup for Marked Tree to make it 13-5. Salem ended the quarter on a 7-0 run to make it 20-5 at the end of one.

Jayla Carter drilled a three-pointer to open the second quarter as Salem hit a trey and two free throws to make it 25-8 Lady Greyhounds. Carter hit two free throws, the Lady 'Hounds canned a three-ball as Barnes got a stick back for Marked Tree making it 28-12 Salem with 2:30 left. The Lady Greyhounds turned the rare four-point play before the Lady Indians got one of two free throws from Carter and Barnes to make it 32-14 Salem. The Lady Greyhounds added a three-ball and a jumper to take a 37-14 lead into the half.
