Trick play sends Hornets to hard luck loss
Piggott (4-1, 2-0) scored on a 70 yard hook and ladder play with just over a minute left before stopping Harrisburg (3-2, 1-1) at the one-yard to preserve a 24-20 in 3A-3 conference football action this past Friday at Hornet Stadium.
Harrisburg got the ball first as Jamason King returned the kick-off out to the Hornets' 30-yard line. Harrisburg moved the ball to midfield behind the running of Ross Heeb, Tayeshaun Warren and Jett Jackson before a penalty on Harrisburg, a run for no gain and an incomplete pass forced the Hornets to put the ball away with 9:50 left. Piggott started their first drive on their own 31-yard line as Gunner Shaw picked up 21 yards on a first down run to the Harrisburg 48-yard line. Luke Boyd rambled for 15 yards down to the Hornets' 35-yard line. Piggott converted a third and one play moving the ball to the 29-yard line before converting a fourth and one putting the ball on the Harrisburg 17-yard line with six minutes left. Boyd rambled 17 yards two plays later to make it 6-0 Mohawks. Trey Gossett ran in the two-point conversion to make it 8-0 Piggott with 5:26 left. Harrisburg used the running of Heeb and Warren to move the ball to the Mohawks' 26-yard line before Warren converted a third and one with an eight yard run to the 18-yard line. Jackson was flushed from the pocket and dropped for a four yard loss on third down before an incomplete pass turned the ball over on downs to Piggott at their own 18-yard line with 1:34 left. The Mohawks moved the ball out to their own 31-yard one four straight running plays as the quarter ended with Piggott up 8-0.
Harrisburg's Ray Michael Jones had a big tackle for a five yard loss before an incomplete pass forced Piggott to punt the ball with it being downed at the Harrisburg 47-yard line with 10:25 left. Two carries by Warren and a carry by Jackson moved the ball to the Mohawks' 37-yard line as Heeb ripped off a 14 yard run to move it to the Piggott 23-yard line with 8:51 left. Warren, Jackson, Heeb and Wright kept pounding the running game moving the ball to the Mohawks' five-yard line before Heeb carried it the last five yards for the Harrisburg touchdown to make it 8-6 with 5:38 left. Parker Jones missed the point-after attempt. Piggott used a four-headed rushing attack with Shaw, Boyd, Gossett and Sky Wright to move the ball to the Harrisburg 26-yard line with 1:28 left in the half. Mason Summers led a swarm of defenders on a loss of four yards run by Piggott before the Mohawks called time-out. Gossett found Brandon Seal for a four-yard pass to the Harrisburg 23-yard line before the Mohawks called another time out. Gossett found Dylan Bellers behind the secondary on a stop and go play for a 23 yard touchdown pass with 46 seconds left in the half. Shaw ran in the two-point conversion to make it 16-6 Piggott. Harrisburg moved the ball to the Piggott 21-yard line behind pass receptions from Jared Lindsey and Warren. Harrisburg spiked the ball before two incomplete passes turned the ball over to Piggott with seven seconds left. Back to back runs for loses brought the second quarter to an end with the Mohawks up 16-6.
