Turnovers costly in Harrisburg loss to Walnut Ridge
Two turnovers by Harrisburg (2-6, 1-4) on their first two possessions of the third quarter led to two Walnut Ridge touchdowns as the Bobcats added a score in the fourth quarter to down the Hornets 28-15 this past Friday in a cold rain during 3A-3 conference action at Hornet Stadium.
Walnut Ridge started their first possession on their own 26-yard line and moved it to the 33-yard line before Jamason King intercepted a pass for the Hornets and returned it to the 14-yard line. A bad snap on first down lost 10 yards as Harrisburg called a time-out. Tayeshaun Warren had a no gain on third down before an incomplete pass on fourth down turned the ball over to the Bobcats on their own 24-yard line with 9:13 left. Walnut Ridge’s offense was hampered by a false start and five-yard tackle for a loss by Daniel Jobe as the Bobcats punted the ball away that was downed at the Harrisburg 43-yard line. Warren picked up 37 yards on three straight carries before Lindsey gained three yards to move the ball to the Walnut Ridge 17-yard line with just under six minutes left in the opening quarter. Warren had the ball knocked loose on the next play with the Bobcats recovering at their own 18-yard line with 5:12 left. Walnut Ridge put together a 10 play drive scoring with 1:17 left to make it 6-0. Ross Heeb blocked the extra-point attempt for Harrisburg. The Hornets with three and out on their next possession and punted the ball away with 30 seconds left. The Bobcats started on their own 38-yard and gained 22 yards on the first play to the Harrisburg 40-yard line as the first came to an end with Walnut Ridge up 6-0.
The Bobcats moved the ball to the Hornets’ 16-yard line before a four yard loss on fourth down gave Harrisburg the ball on their own 20-yard line with 10:43 left. Warren gained 11 yards on two carries before Jett Jackson hit Jared Lindsey on a screen pass for 20 yards to the midfield with 9:35 left in the half. Warren lost a yard, Jackson picked up seven yards only to see Drew Wright mishandle the snap losing eight yards back to the Harrisburg 48-yard line. Jackson gained five yards on fourth down turning the ball over to Walnut Ridge with 7:27 left. The Bobcats went three and out punting the ball away with it being downed at the Hornets’ three-yard line. Heeb ran for six yards on two carries before gaining 59 yards on a pass from Jackson to the Walnut Ridge 18-yard line with 3:33 left. Jackson found Lindsey for six yards as Warren had back to back two yard runs to the Bobcats’ eight-yard line with 2:09 left. Heeb ran eight yards on the next play to make it 6-6. Parker Jones was good on the extra-point making it 7-6 Harrisburg with 1:52 left. The Bobcats punted after a three and out as Harrisburg took over on their own 39-yard line with 1:02 left. Jackson ran for 22 yards on first down as a personal foul on Walnut Ridge moved the ball to the Bobcats’ 24-yard line with 54 seconds left. Warren ran for four yards before Jackson hit Heeb with a 20 yard touchdown pass to make it 13-6 Harrisburg. The Hornets faked the extra-point as Heeb hit Jacob Wallace with the pass to make the score 15-6 Harrisburg with 25 seconds left. Walnut Ridge ran one play after the kick-off return as the first half ended with Harrisburg leading 15-6.
