Late basket gives Wildcats season opening win
Ben Turner hit a jumper in the lane with 22 seconds left to lift Trumann to a 70-68 win over Tuckerman in the season opener for the Wildcats. The game was a rematch from the Kell Classic finals in Swifton that Trumann also won 58-54 back in January.
Tuckerman took the early 3-0 lead before MJ Barnes scored inside and Turner canned a three-ball to make it 5-3 Wildcats. The Bulldogs got a basket inside as Aaron Phelan hit a three-pointer making it 8-5 Trumann with 4:18 left. Tuckerman scored the next eight points to take a 13-8 lead as Mario Burks canned a three-pointer to cut the lead to 13-11 at the end of one quarter of play.
Turner tied the game at 13 with two free throws early in the second quarter only to see the Bulldogs hit one of two free throws and a jumper to take a 16-13 lead. Zach Buchanan hit one of two free throws, Tuckerman hit two free throws before Milton Lewis, III hit one of two free throws and Barnes stuck back in an offensive rebound to make it 18-17 Tuckerman with 5:28 left. The Bulldogs canned a three-ball, Barnes scored inside, Tuckerman hit two free throws as Turner canned another three-pointer for the Wildcats to make it 23-22 Bulldog. Tuckerman hit a jumper in the lane, Barnes had a stick back basket, the Bulldogs netted a three-pointer as Burks canned a three-pointer for Trumann to make the score 28-27 Tuckerman. The Bulldogs hit a three-pointer, Turner converted an old-school three-point play, Tuckerman hit two free throws as Dedrick Coleman scored inside making the score 33-32 Bulldogs with just over a minute left. Tuckerman got inside for a score as Turner scored inside to make the halftime score 35-34 Bulldogs.
