Lady Indians fall in overtime thriller at NEA Invitational
Four quarters was enough time to settle the score as Rector outscored Marked Tree 9-5 in the extra quarter to take a 62-58 in the opening round of the girls Division I bracket at the NEA Invitational Tournament this past Saturday in Jonesboro.
Rector took the early 2-0 lead before the Lady Indians got one of two free throws from Taylor McCuiston and two free throws from Makayla Marshall to take a 3-2 lead. The Lady Cougars hit one of two free throws and scored on a layup to go up 5-3 as McCuiston's jumper in the lane for Marked Tree tied the game at 5 with 3:22 left. Rector scored inside and added a three-pointer to go up 10-5 as Shira Hendrix hit one of two free throws for Marked Tree to make it 10-6 Lady Cougars. Rector stuck back an offensive rebound before Makayla White scored inside for Marked Tree with 33 seconds left to make the score 12-8 Lady Cougars after one.
Marshall hit two free throws for the Lady Indians as Rector got a basket in the paint to make the score 14-10 Lady Cougars early in the second quarter. Marked Tree got a steal and layup from Hendrix, a three-pointer from Sydney Rotscheid and one of two free throws from Marshall to take a 16-14 lead with 4:40 left. Rector hit one of two free throws, Marshall scored inside for the Lady Indians, the Lady Cougars hit a jumper before Marshall had a stick back for Marked Tree to make it 20-17 Lady Indians. Rector scored back to back baskets to take a 21-20 lead only to see the Lady Indians get back to back scores from Jayla Carpenter and Marshall to retake the lead at 24-21. The Lady Cougars hit one of two free throws with four seconds left in the half to make it 24-22 Marked Tree at the break.
