Marked Tree beats Rivercrest 77-70 in NEA Invitational
Marked Tree knocked down 11 three-pointers and held off a late Rivercrest charge to take a 77-70 win in their opening round game of the boys' Division II NEA Invitational Tournament this past Saturday in Jonesboro.
Trayvius Brown put the Indians on the board first with two free throws as the Colts scored inside to tie the game at two. Trayvius Brown canned a three-pointer before Eli McCrary followed with a three-pointer for Marked Tree to make it 8-2 Indians. Rivercrest scored back to back baskets to cut the lead to 8-6 as Trayvius Brown hit two free throws for Marked Tree to make the score 10-6 Indians. The Colts scored the next five points to take an 11-10 lead only to see Israel Malone convert an old-school three-point play for the Indians to make it 13-11 Marked Tree with 3:40 left. Brennon Honeycutt canned a three-pointer for the Indians, Rivercrest hit a baseline jumper, McCrary netted another three-pointer for Marked Tree before the Colts scored from the paint to make it 19-15 Marked Tree at the end of one.
Marked Tree got back to back baskets from Trayvius Brown to open the second quarter as Rivercrest hit a three-pointer and a jumper making the score 23-20 Indians. Trayvius Brown scored off the fast break before canning a three-ball to make it 28-20 before the Colts netted a three-pointer to make it 28-23 Marked Tree with 3:54 left. Honeycutt drained a three-pointer for the Indians, Rivercrest scored inside as Jack Brown hit a jumper followed by a three-pointer for Marked Tree to give the Indians a 36-25 lead. The Colts scored the next five points to cut the lead to 36-30 before Honeycutt hit a three-pointer to make the score 39-30 Indians. The Colts hit one of two free throws as Jack Brown hit one of two free throws for Marked Tree to make it 40-31 Marked Tree at the half.
