Lady Hornets win regional opener, regional title
Harrisburg scored two runs in the top of the sixth to retake the lead before adding an insurance run in the top of the seventh taking a 4-3 win over Gosnell in the opening round of the 3A-3 Regional softball tournament this past Thursday in Palestine-Wheatley. The Lady Hornets earned a spot in the 3A State softball tournament to be played in Harrison. The Lady Hornets came back this past Friday and beat Bald Knob 3-2 in the semi-finals and Palestine-Wheatley 5-3 in the finals.
Ansley Wixson led off with a single for Harrisburg and went to second when Anna Walker reached on an error. Jehlian Wright reached on fielder’s choice that forced Walker at second and moved Wixson to third. Wixson scored when Kloey Harlson reached on an error making it 1-0 Harrisburg. Hayden Hopkins lined out for the third out. Harlson made quick work of Gosnell in the bottom of the inning with two fly ball outs and a ground out. Destiny McGuire and Gretchen Morgan both lined out for the first two outs of the second inning before Cassie Armstrong reached on an error. Kendyll Grissom watched strike three for the third out. Gosnell went down in order in the bottom half on a pop out and two strikeouts to keep the score 1-0 Lady Hornets.
Wixson doubled leading off the top of the third inning and was thrown out trying to stretch the hit into a triple. Walker singled and was forced out at second base on Wright's fielder's choice grounder. Harlson flew out for the third out. The Lady Pirates got a two-out single only to leave the runner stranded to keep the score 1-0 Lady Hornets. Hopkins grounded out and McGuire struck out for two quick outs in the top of the fourth before Morgan singled. Armstrong struck out leaving the runner on base. A Harrisburg error and a two-run home run by Gosnell put the Lady Pirates on top 2-1 after four innings of play.
